REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT

Roughly 1 in 36 children have autism spectrum disorder, and many autistic kids face unique dental health challenges. We are sensitive to their unique situation and care for children with autism and other special needs. By providing a gentle dental experience, we help all children feel more comfortable at the dentist’s office.

Navigating Dental Care for Autistic Children

For children with autism, a dentist appointment can be an overwhelming experience. That’s especially true if they have any of the following challenges:

  • Dental anxiety
  • Sensitivity to fluorescent lights
  • Difficulties with changes in routine
  • Problems understanding instructions
  • Low tolerance for X-rays, scraping during cleaning, and flossing

Using a gentle chairside manner, we explain procedures to children before performing them. This helps kids with autism establish a comfortable, familiar dental routine.

Sedation dentistry can make it easier for autistic children to tolerate dental treatment. We have pediatric sedation with nitrous oxide available, a safe and mild sedative that works quickly and wears off just as quickly.

Autism and Oral Health

Children with autism are at a higher risk of tooth decay, in part because of the inherent challenges of keeping up with oral hygiene. They may take medications that cause dry mouth, which can lead to cavities.

Dentistry Tips for Parents of Autistic Kids

The best way to help your child have a lifetime of good oral health is to make dental care part of their routine from early on. Begin brushing their teeth when their first tooth appears. Experiment with different dental products to find the ones your child tolerates best. For example, your child may prefer toothpaste that doesn’t foam or has little or no flavor. Continue brushing your child’s teeth for them until they can do it on their own.

If your child receives occupational therapy or speech-language pathology services, these therapists can help them get used to a dental hygiene routine. Don’t be afraid to employ distractions during brushing, such as the television. A reward when brushing is done, such as a favorite game, can be motivating.

To help visits go more smoothly, tell your child what to expect at the dentist, step by step. Bring comforting items to the appointment, such as a weighted blanket, a stuffed animal, and headphones with music.
